When they founded BR in 1944, in the heart of Manhattan's
financial district, Al Bertholon and Thaddeus Rowland set out to create
insurance programs that would meet the diverse needs of professionals.
Notably, BR was one of the first brokers to develop insurance programs
for professional associations on behalf of their members beginning
with a disability income program for The Association of the Bar of the
City of New York in 1956.
By 1990, BR was on its way to becoming one of the largest providers of
association-sponsored insurance nationwide. It was also in this year
that the company became employee-owned.
2004 has also become a noteworthy year in two important ways. On April 1st, BR was acquired by
USI Holdings Corporation of Briarcliff Manor, New York and became part
of its newly formed division,
USI Affinity. USI is the 9th
largest insurance brokerage firm in the United States and enhances our
ability to serve our association partners and customers while retaining
our operational autonomy. And on June 6th, BR celebrated its 60th
anniversary. In these six decades, BR has become a trusted and
stable source of personal and business insurance to nearly 50,000
professionals nationwide an accomplishment of which we are very proud.
Our corporate office remains in downtown Manhattan just as it did back
in 1944, but today we also maintain offices in Boston, New Jersey and
Washington, DC. This regional presence brings us closer to both our
associations and customers, and affords us a better understanding of
their unique needs.
